I have been home for a week now from Uganda and still feel like I am there. The Impact of this Journey of Compassion on me personally is quite astounding. This was my 4th JOC, and my first to Africa. I was not prepared for the sense of connection and oneness I would feel for the people of this nation. What a delight to see their hunger for Jesus and their expectancy to see Jesus at work in their lives. It was truly humbling and challenging at the same time.
As they came for prayer for healing they expected to get healed and they were healed. Backs, necks, shoulders, arms, legs, feet, knees, hands – healed, all pain gone and freedom of movement. Fevers went, headaches went, stomach aches went. Eyes were healed – people seeing double were now seeing clearly, people who couldn’t see to read could now read again. What a delight and a joy also to get the opportunity to stand with people as they gave their hearts to Jesus – the greatest healing of all. Some as a response to preaching, some as a response to their healing, some as a response to just going to them and chatting and one who walked up and asked if he could give his heart to Jesus.
Apart from praying with people, which is my passion, we experienced so much of life in Uganda. We met a people group who are so delightful. We went to the villages and an orphanage doing medical clinics – saw a baby’s life saved who very close to death by the medical staff, saw many, many people treated and given medication for many different conditions. We went to the local hospital to pray and give gifts of soap and sugar to the patients, went to the local prison bringing the gospel, prayer and anti-parasite medication. The leaders of the team and church leaders met to discuss ongoing projects that will empower the people and bring improvement to their lives.
I know that it is wonderful to read about what God is doing in the nations but words cannot express the delight and privilege it is to actually be there and experience Jesus at work so powerfully. To see and meet the committed men and women of God who are living out their faith in the most difficult conditions, who lay down foundations of prayer on which we get to stand and be a little part of the answer. It is such a humbling yet joyful experience, once you have been there you can never be the same.
