Updates to This Project

Over a thousand students can now access safe drinking water in their schools.

Darrell Nelson, BSF team head said they initiated the installation of 15 biosand filters in various elementary schools in Iligan City with a total of 1,673 children benefiting from them as of August 2011.

Each filter produces enough clean drinking water per day to serve a maximum of 130 students with calculated water requirements based on an average child's weight (40-kg) and per student water consumption of approximate 600ml during school hours . Each school is profiled by the BSF Community Development Team and the appropriate biosand filters are installed to accommodate each school

Atty/City Councilor Marlene Young the founder and proponent of "Project Angel Tree" and Sea to Sea Ministries in partnership with Impact Nations Canada initiated the distribution of phase 1 as a pilot-testing initiative. The Iligan City DepEd (Department of Education) officials in the region were delighted some of their schools were selected as beneficiaries of the BSF biosand filters and gave the green light signal on the proposal. DepEd's appreciation for "Project Angel Tree's" goal to bring safe clean drinking water to 10,000 children was met with overwhelming support. However DepEd further requested the partnership with BSF Philippines to help over 46,000 children with the
"BUY ONE - BLESS ONE" program.

The BSF team through careful evaluation of the recipient schools, ensure efficiency and maximum use of each biosand filter using proven Community Development education and followup. Working with the principals/teachers of each school they encourage making it a part of their school science project.

Each filter is given a unique name, like BOOBOO or other fun creative names. Students join the "Water Scouts" who are assigned to each biosand filter. Using "water charts" each filter is maintained ensuring correct usage for its maximum potential of clean drinking water each day. An exciting project for every school and their students with incentives and year-end awards. Sustainability the overall goal!

28 additional biosand filters are designated for more schools in the month of September/October!
BSF and the DepEd are currently profiling schools of which just one has a student-population of over a thousand.

How does "BUY ONE - BLESS ONE" work?

BSF Philippines works with local corporations, governments, social networks, NGO's and individual sponsors who "BUY ONE" for 3000 pesos. BSF Philippines works with "matching" funds from anonymous sponsors who in turn "BLESS ONE". This strategic partnership strengthens the "ownership" value of a project thus creating greater sustainable projects with biosand filters and their beneficiaries.

We look forward to working with our BSF partners in Iligan City for years to come, with many other cities, villages now getting excited to work with BSF Philippines.
