Steve interviews Tim: part 1, part 2

Daniel Anggara recently replaced Tim as our new water guy in the Philippines. Here's his first story....

During our visit to Cagalian Elementary School, we had the opportunity to visit Mrs. Angco, one of the teachers in this rural school of 318 students. When we arrived to her classroom, she was busy teaching her grade one students.
Knowing that we are associated with the filters that the school received about a year ago, she instantly gave her students some tasks to do and came out to greet us.
We then headed straight to the small shaded area behind the classroom where one of the filters was located. As Mrs. Angco was explaining to us how useful the filters have been, curious eyes of some of her students were staring at us through the gated windows separating them and us.
Mrs. Angco expressed her gratitude to Kasilak and Dole, who funded Impact Nations Philippines to bring these filters to them. The filters, according to Mrs. Angco, bring peace of mind to the teachers there, knowing that their students are able to get drinking water that is free from parasites and bacteria.
The filters also mean convenience and savings to the teachers, as they do not need to purchase bottled water. There is a pipe running from the water stream where they get their water from, just two feet away from the filter.
And due to the nature of the filtration process, which involves no chemical filtration, no mechanical parts, and even no electricity, Mrs. Angco said everybody can rest assured that there are no harmful side effects resulting from the filtration process.
She confirmed that there has been no diarrhea or other stomach problem reported since the filters were installed.
Then as we walked her back to her classroom, we decided to take a picture or two with her grade 1 students. The students immediately screamed with joy when we told them to stand by the blackboard to have their pictures taken.
As I was leaving the classroom, the students raised their voice one more time, this time to say, "Thank you visitors."

Yes,the Biosand water filter Pampanga project is now operational. We hired 6 locals to work for us making 10 filters a day.Our target is to make 500 filters and distribute around the province of pampanga.Attached are pictures of our rented shop in the province of pampanga.

We just completed our first full week of clean water operations in Pampanga! Pampanga is a province located about two hours north of Manila. We are working with the provincial government and a Catholic organization called the Social Action Center of Pampanga (SACOP).

Our crew is already busy building filters at a rate of more than 240 per month. In the coming weeks we will be distributing filters to various communities throughout the province, to families who are in desperate need of safe drinking water.

SACOP is busy organizing the distribution effort. It is their hope to arrange for up to five families to share each filter. That means we could be providing A LIFE TIME SUPPLY OF SAFE DRINKING WATER TO 1500 PEOPLE PER WEEK!!!

We'll be sure to keep you up to date as this program progresses.

We are currently in Pampanga to finalize a deal with the provincial government that will bring clean water to 500 families. I'll be posting news about that in the coming days, but please be praying for us as we go into a big planning meeting with all involved parties tomorrow morning.

In other news, Toti's wife is recovering very well from her emergency surgery and has been given a month of paid vacation to recover. Thanks for your prayers!

In case you missed it, I posted a news article about our crazy day in the schools of Calinan this week.

Email from Tim: Hey, just wanted to give you a heads up that Toti's wife, Connie, went in for an emergency appendectomy this afternoon.  She is out of surgery and everything is okay.  I'm not sure what this will mean for them financially (they have health insurance, but I don't know what happens if she misses a bunch of work).  Anyways, just wanted you guys to know so that you can be praying.

Toti and I were at the provincial capital of Agusan del Sur yesterday to talk to their staff about their ongoing biosand water filter pilot project. They are working in partnership with the Mindanao Baptist Rural Life Center, a group that we trained to manufacture filters nearly two years ago. Together, under the supervision of my friend Rinel Dacanay, they have distributed over 700 filters in the last four months. There are now filters in every school and every barangay hall in the province! They plan to order another 1000 units this year. Way to go Rinel!

Just got back from Luzon where Dad and I met with the governor of Pampanga and his provincial administrator. It looks like we will be starting a manufacturing center in their province and they will purchase filters from us for distribution to poor communities.

I really like Governor Panlilio. He is a Godly man (used to be a Catholic priest), and he has many programs ministering to the poor. You can be praying that he is not thrown from office by some very crooked political opponents who are trying to remove him from office with some bogus election "recount" procedures. I'll keep you updated in the coming days and weeks.
