Daniel Anggara recently replaced Tim as our new water guy in the Philippines. Here's his first story....
During our visit to Cagalian Elementary School, we had the opportunity to visit Mrs. Angco, one of the teachers in this rural school of 318 students. When we arrived to her classroom, she was busy teaching her grade one students.
Knowing that we are associated with the filters that the school received about a year ago, she instantly gave her students some tasks to do and came out to greet us.
We then headed straight to the small shaded area behind the classroom where one of the filters was located. As Mrs. Angco was explaining to us how useful the filters have been, curious eyes of some of her students were staring at us through the gated windows separating them and us.
Mrs. Angco expressed her gratitude to Kasilak and Dole, who funded Impact Nations Philippines to bring these filters to them. The filters, according to Mrs. Angco, bring peace of mind to the teachers there, knowing that their students are able to get drinking water that is free from parasites and bacteria.
The filters also mean convenience and savings to the teachers, as they do not need to purchase bottled water. There is a pipe running from the water stream where they get their water from, just two feet away from the filter.
And due to the nature of the filtration process, which involves no chemical filtration, no mechanical parts, and even no electricity, Mrs. Angco said everybody can rest assured that there are no harmful side effects resulting from the filtration process.
She confirmed that there has been no diarrhea or other stomach problem reported since the filters were installed.
Then as we walked her back to her classroom, we decided to take a picture or two with her grade 1 students. The students immediately screamed with joy when we told them to stand by the blackboard to have their pictures taken.
As I was leaving the classroom, the students raised their voice one more time, this time to say, "Thank you visitors."
